Scientific name: Hordeum vulgare

Common name(s): Barley

Name as shown in Phylogenes: Barley

Ploidy: Diploid

Description:

Hordeum vulgare (barley) is an ancient cereal crop that was first domesticated 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. It is the fourth largest cereal crop and is primarily used for animal feed and in the malting and distilling industries.

Because it is a simple diploid, barley is an excellent experimental model for the Triticeae, a tribe that also includes cereals such as wheat (a hexaploid) and rye.
