Description:
Also known as Upland Cotton, Gossypium hirsutum, is a 1.5-2m height perennial and annual shrub, found in tropical and temperate regions including agricultural systems around the world including the Americas, India, China, the Middle East and Australia.
It is an important commodity grown for its fibers, which are actually seed coat trichomes, and for seed oil. Cotton has minimal moisture requirements and can survive hot, dry weather environments. G. hirsutum accounts for 90% of world production with India and China being the leading producers. The sequences are from the TM-1 cultivar, an A(t)D(t) allotetraploid genome.
