Description:

Juglans regia, commonly known as English walnut, Persian Walnut or simply walnut, is a large, deciduous tree native to Central Asia. It is the major walnut species cultivated for nut production. The nuts are a rich source of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, the small phenolic acids gallic and ellagic acid, as well as the complex polyphenols tannins and flavonoids.

Study of Juglans regia will help breeding for traits such as yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, harvest time and nut quality.
