Scientific name: Selaginella moellendorffii

Common name(s):

Name as shown in Phylogenes: S. moellendorffii

Ploidy: diploid

Description:

Selaginella moellendorffii is a spikemoss that has scale-like leaves and bears spores. It is a member of the Selaginellaceae (spikemosses) family of lycophytes. Phylogenetically the lycophytes are placed between the bryophytes (non-vascular land plants including the liverworts, hornworts and mosses) and the euphyllophytes (including the ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants).

Selaginella moellendorffii is a model organism, with a small genome size (ca. 200 Mb). It is an important resource in studying the evolution of green plants and their early adaptation to land.
